Giant vesicles at the prolate–oblate transition: A macroscopic bistable system
نویسندگان
چکیده
Giant phospholipid vesicles are shown to exhibit thermally activated transitions between a prolate and an oblate shape on a time scale of several seconds. From the fluctuating contour of such a vesicle we extract ellipticity as an effective reaction coordinate whose temporal probability distribution is bimodal. We then reconstruct the effective potential from which we derive an activation energy of the order of kBT in agreement with theoretical calculations. The dynamics of this transition is well described within a Kramers model of overdamped diffusion in a bistable potential. Thus, this system can serve as a model for macroscopic bistability. Shapes of neutron - rich A ≈ 190 odd - odd nuclei
Following from the prediction by Hilton and Mang [1] of “giant backbending” in 180Hf, caused by a collective oblate rotational band crossing the prolate ground-state band, there has been further theoretical investigation of this phenomenon [2–5]. The calculated shape change is understood to be induced by the effects of rotation alignment. It is related to the prediction of a ground-state shape ...
متن کاملCellular Automata Simulation of a Bistable Reaction-Diffusion System: Microscopic and Macroscopic Approaches
The Cellular Automata method has been used to simulate the pattern formation of the Schlögl model as a bistable Reaction-Diffusion System. Both microscopic and macroscopic Cellular Automata approaches have been considered and two different methods for obtaining the probabilities in the microscopic approach have been mentioned. The results show the tendency of the system towards the more sta...
متن کاملPrediction and possible observation of an oblate shape isomer in 190 W
The small number of oblate-shaped nuclei found in nature, compared with the many prolate nuclei, is a surprising feature of nuclear structure, which seems to be related to the strength of the nuclear spin-orbit interaction [1]. Furthermore, with increasing angular momentum, the collective rotation of an oblate shape, about an axis perpendicular to its axis of symmetry, is disadvantaged relative...
متن کامل2 N ov 2 00 7 Rotation - driven prolate - to - oblate shape phase transition in 190 W : A projected shell model study ⋆
A shape phase transition is demonstrated to occur in W by applying the Projected Shell Model, which goes beyond the usual mean-field approximation. Rotation alignment of neutrons in the high-j, i13/2 orbital drives the yrast sequence of the system, changing suddenly from prolate to oblate shape at angular momentum 10~. We propose observables to test the picture.
متن کاملThe prolate-oblate shape phase transition in the interacting boson model
The prolate-oblate shape phase transition in the the interacting boson model is revisited by adopting the transitional Hamiltonian with a linear dependence on the control parameter. The analysis of the shape phase transition in both the large-N limit and finite N case shows that the O(6) symmetry is robust as the critical point symmetry of the prolate-oblate shape phase transition.
